CELEBRATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE
AND THE WEEK OF SPIRITUALITY, VALUES AND GLOBAL CONCERNS

Actualism is pleased to be a part of an ever increasing number of organizations and associations around the planet that will be joining together as groups and individuals to celebrate the International Day of Peace – September 21, 2008, and the Week of Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns – celebrating the Spirit of the United Nations and commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – from October 20 – 24, 2008 at United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The observation of the International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations and was set as September 21 annually in 2001. The Week of Spirituality initiated and organized by the Committee for Spiritual Values and Global Concerns-NY, which is a member of the CONGO (Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations at the UN). For a detailed calendar of events, click here and a PDF file (1.53 MB) will open.

The Actualism Star Centers located in California and New York City, as well as the members of the Actualism Community throughout the US and around the globe, will be working together to bring a greater awareness of the Infinite and Eternal unity and harmony of every member of our Human Family, regardless of religious or political belief, national or ethnic origin, gender or age, economic or educational status, health or lack thereof.

We are hoping that you will feel inner directed to participate in these celebrations from wherever you are on the planet. We are encouraged by the words of Eleanor Roosevelt who regarded the Universal Declaration as her greatest accomplishment.

"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person; the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm, or office where he works. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."

--Eleanor Roosevelt

You may ask: What Can I Do?

Familiarize yourself with the Goals of the International Day of Peace and the Culture of Peace as well as the International Decade of the Culture of Peace.

Become familiar with the spiritually inspired documents of our times: The UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the Constitution of the United States, particularly the Bill of Rights.

Bring awareness of  and respect for Peace and Human Rights through Spirituality and Values by organizing an event on September 21, or during the Week of Spirituality, 20-24th October or at least focusing your awareness for a specific period of time  on September 21, and each day of the Week of Spirituality.

By this process each of us can serve to bring a greater potency to the expression of human potential and the advancement of the principles outlined in the Culture of Peace, the UN Charter, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Here are some additional examples of how you, as an individual can participate:

Donate to a charity, focus meditation on Peace for All, reflecting on human rights becoming a reality, show respect to an individual or group, pray for those who are suffering and or offer love and compassion. Volunteer to assist those in need in your community through food kitchens, shelters, elderly residences, etc.

The Power Of One

One song can spark a moment,

One flower can wake the dream.

One tree can start a forest,

One bird can herald spring.

One smile begins a friendship,

One handclasp lifts a soul.

One star can guide a ship at sea,

One word can frame the goal.

One vote can change a nation,

One sunbeam lights a room.

One candle wipes out darkness,

One laugh will conquer gloom.

One step must start each journey,

One word must start each prayer.

One hope will raise our spirits,

One touch can show you care.

One voice can speak with wisdom,

One heart can know what's true.

One life can make the difference,

You see, IT'S UP TO YOU!
